The next segment of our trip around Route 1 in Iceland is uploaded and ready to watch here. We leave Goðafoss and continue our drive to the Capital of the North, Akureyri. On the way, we see more farmland, sheep, snow dusted mountains, and a long tunnel. It’s a pretty short video, and I didn’t take any photos except for one of the tunnel and the final one of the Bónus pig mascot.

It was still raining during this part of the trip, but the fog had lifted and we can see a little of the landscape in this video. We come to Vaðlaheiðargöng, the toll tunnel in the north that is 7.4km long. You have 24 hours to pay the toll, and you can pay it online easily. When we went, it was about $15USD per car to pass through. However, it saves you a lot of time and it is a safe way to pass through the mountain in the event of bad weather.

We exit the tunnel and behold, across the water is Akureyri. We do pass by the Forest Lagoon. We didn’t have the time or inclination to stop by on our trip, but you can see it on our left soon after we leave the tunnel. You can see the airport , too, in this video. They will be adding more flights directly into Akureyri which is very exciting for travelers! We cross a bridge and go to find our hotel location. We’ve included some of our humor as we pull into this stop, so if you’re wondering what type of people we really are, well…here you go.
We end the video at Bónus where we stocked up on snacks and grabbed lunch. We really enjoyed the food at this grocery store, and I found the prices to be comparable to those in New England. The roast beef sandwiches with remoulade and fried onions, the Biscoff cream filled donuts, crème brûlée skyr, and some apples from France topped my list of favorite items. Also, I got very excited to find Halloween items in a grocery store in Iceland!

I am excited for the next video because we drive around Akureyri. I loved this town so much, and I could spend a week (lifetime) just enjoying the beauty and vibe of it. Happy adventuring, and take care of yourselves!
