Driving to Höfn: The Video

Our latest video is out, and in this one we conclude Day 5 of our Ring Road adventure. We leave behind the wild weather at the Jökulsárlón lagoon and head towards the town of Höfn. I really loved this part of the drive because you can see so many waterfalls. And, most of the tour bus operators don’t go beyond the lagoon, so the crowds really thinned out. We felt like true explorers with our Viking music blasting in the car. It was pretty amazing.

We stayed at a really nice guesthouse called Milk Factory because it did used to be a milk factory! The location was really convenient for our trip, and, if you need an accessible room, this will be a great hotel choice for you. Our room used to be the loading dock, so it was wide, had a ramp, and the room was spacious. In addition, it had a really accessible bathroom. I think this was my favorite bathroom on the trip. Breakfast was included, as well, and they had delicious skyr parfaits along with all the standard Icelandic fare.

After we checked in, we went to dinner at Pakkhús Restaurant for our anniversary. This meal was our one, planned splurge on food, so we had no budget. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. I think this meal is one of the top meals I’ve had in my entire 50 years of eating food on this planet. The langoustine soup made us both want to abandon all decorum and lick the bowl like heathens. The lamb literally melted in my mouth. The dessert included an at the table event of melting this chocolate ball filled with even more chocolate and raspberry puree by pouring hot caramel over the whole thing. If you find yourself in the area, go treat yourself to a meal. You won’t regret it!

The last stop we make this evening is at the Vínbúðin, the state liquor store, and the only place to buy alcohol in Iceland. If you neglect to buy it at the airport, you, too, will be stuck with the state liquor store options. They’re not very extensive, and the open hours are not very long. I would recommend that if you enjoy an evening drink to buy anything you want at the airport duty free shop. Most hotels and bars have a happy hour when the prices are much cheaper, as well. Anyway, we got some Brennivín to try and drove back to our hotel for the evening. I seem to recall that in this room, yet another traveler from Germany had left their Netflix account logged in. Thanks again, random German people, for letting us borrow your Netflix account!

After a great night’s rest, we will head into the Eastfjords in the next set of videos on a clear day. The scenery will start off pretty much the same, but by the time we end the day, we will be surrounded by snow capped mountains. See you then!
