Spring in New England

Happy May, everyone! While today is rainy and cool, we have finally made it to warmer weather. It is lilac season here, a season that is all too brief. If you’ll be in New England, I recommend finding a lilac festival to attend. Arnold Arboretum has Lilac Sunday coming up on May 11. The Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion in New Hampshire is another fun place to visit and see blooming lilacs. Though, if you are tight on money, you can honestly find lilacs in many yards in the area. Simply take a walk and breathe in the delicious scent of these purple blooms!

Lilacs!

Hiking is another inexpensive and scenic way to see New England in spring. All of the plants return to life, sending green shoots and colorful flowers up to the sun. After a few months of gray skies and snow, we New Englanders definitely appreciate the vibrant colors!

A return to life…

If you are into books and comics, come to Haverhill, MA and attend the HPL Comic Con held this year on May 17 at the Haverhill Public Library. It is absolutely free to attend, and the event includes crafts, panels, artists and writers, vendors, food, and more. Ample free parking in the library lot and on the street makes it even more convenient! Bring the kids and adults to support this awesome library event.

The farms are coming to life here in New England, as well. Pick your own (PYO) events will soon start with berries, flowers, vegetables, and other offerings from various farms. PYO times are fun because you get a close look at the farms, you can choose the produce you want, and every farm has unique treats and activities to explore. Bring a camera for some uniquely New England photo ops! In addition, keep an eye on free giveaways. Farmer Dave’s in Dracut, MA recently gave away surplus fruit and vegetables for free. Farmer Dave has always been one of my favorite farmers, so go check out his amazing farm!

It is time to get outside and recharge our spirits…and our vitamin D levels. What fun activities do you enjoy in spring?
