Sunset on the Merrimack River

I live in Massachusetts in a town on the Merrimack River. This river has shaped the landscape of the Merrimack Valley and the history of my town. In summer, the deep blue skies reflect off of the water, making it look like a velvety cerulean ribbon running through town. In winter, the water can freeze, sending chunks of ice and snow down to meet the ocean. Bald eagles live along its banks, and it is home to many types of fish.

If you’re in the Merrimack Valley, consider buying tickets to one of the Merrimack River cruises that depart from both Newburyport, MA and Haverhill, MA and it was operated by Yankee Clipper Tours. My husband and I went on one of their sunset excursions, and we had a lovely evening.

We embarked on our cruise in Newburyport, MA. There is ample parking in large, gravel lots, and our dock was well-marked and easy to find. You can purchase drinks and snacks, as well. There is a restroom on board, but it is down a few stairs. The boat had plenty of seats with tables. Get in line early to snag the seats you prefer as it is first come, first served for seating.

The captain gave us lots of information as we cruised, pointing out any interesting wildlife or landmarks along the way. We sailed out of Newburyport to the mouth of the Merrimack River in Salisbury, MA where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Our captain timed the sunset perfectly as we entered the ocean and just enjoyed the view for a few minutes. He did a few turns so both sides of the boat got the excellent views.

Back in Newburyport. We happened to see an eagle when we passed under the bridge!

Lights came on inside the boat as we navigated back up the Merrimack creating a romantic atmosphere. Everyone was relaxed, and it was the perfect, low stress way to end the day. I am excited to try their tours out of Haverhill, as well as some of their other tour offerings. If you’re vacationing near the Merrimack Valley, consider adding this fun activity into your itinerary!
