Id0l Jam!

This weekend, I had the pleasure of attending my first Id0l Jam presented by Metam0re. Id0l Jam is a free event held for the Idol cosplay community. With guests and attendees from all across New England (and beyond), this event showcases the talent of local artists, dancers, singers, costume designers, wig stylists, and more. With live performances, trivia contests, cosplay contests, Id0l Jam provides a creative community gathering for everyone interested in music and anime.

The event was really fun, but even more important is the community. I’m much older than the average guest at these events, and I go to support my daughter. But I still enjoy being around these people because they are authentic and generous.

I had never spent an entire day at one of these conventions. These young people offer so much love, so much support for each other. Someone feels sick? Ten people are there with ibuprofen, water, a chair, anything they need. Someone drops stuff or loses a wallet? Everyone stops to help out. One moment in particular really stood out for me, though.

Towards the end of the day, the final set of dancers were performing. One person got on stage, then left. Everyone went silent, and eventually, the show went on without them. Later, though…they came back out. With a couple of dancers who had already been on stage as their back up, they did the whole routine. Not just that, but the entire room stood up, waving penlights, cheering them on. Then, they got a standing ovation. It was one of the most beautiful, magical things I’ve ever seen.

This moment captures what I love about this Id0l convention community. They take care of each other. They help each other. They love each other as unique and special human beings. I really feel we can all learn from their good example that a successful community cares about one another. I hope all of you get help the next time you’re scared. I hope all of you are cheered on for your bravery in following your dreams, even if you’re frightened. Times are hard for so many people right now. Spread some kindness. Help someone. Become the person you wish to have at your side when things get rough.

If you are into cosplay or anime, I highly encourage you to find events like Id0l Jam in your area. While nothing is set in stone, rumor has it Id0l Jam may be expanding in the future to run over multiple days. How exciting! Be sure to follow Metam0re on Instagram for details about this event and future updates. Happy adventuring!
