How are you doing these days? Times have been better for our family, so plans for big trips are on hold right now. But, I still love to travel. So what do you do when you’ve got basically no money, but still want to get out and see new places? Let’s see what ideas we can come up with together!
Honestly, my very first suggestion is to go to your local library. Yes, you can check out free books, movies, games, music, and even cool stuff like laptops, sewing machines, and tools. But we’re here for brand new experiences, so be sure to check out their monthly programs! From art classes to lectures, animal encounters to puppet shows, you might be amazed at the interesting programs your library offers. In fact, check all of the libraries in your general area! We spent an entire summer visiting new libraries in our state. Finally, look at any museum passes your library owns. At my library, we can check out passes that allow free or discounted admission to the zoo, art museums, the symphony, outdoor recreation facilities, and more.
My second tip for a fun and budget friendly adventure is to decide how far you’re willing to drive, and then plan a road trip using side roads or scenic routes to get there. I always google the route and find a few places to stop. The library, always a good choice as I said above. But other fun places might be cemeteries, parks, interesting monuments, hiking areas, scenic stops for a picnic, or local shops to grab a drink or inexpensive treat. Grab a pass from your library, plan a little road trip to get to your destination, and you’ve got yourself a super fun, travel day!
Another tip for inexpensive travel fun is to find all the free events. Free outdoor concerts, festivals, celebrations, art shows, and more happen around my town from spring to autumn. Some of my favorite carefree times are sitting on a blanket in the park, listening to local bands, and eating picnic dinner with friends. Now is a great time to consider reconnecting with those you love in meaningful ways. Good conversation is priceless, after all. So pack your blanket, your food, and pile in the car with your people on a local adventure this summer!
Speaking of free, Free Comic Book Day is coming up on May 3. Why not find a comic book store in your area that is participating, plan a fun drive, pack some fun food, and go collect a few free comic books? Free Comic Book Day is always fun, many stores offer excellent sales and free books, and we have seen some really cool costumes! It is a day of fun for all ages.
One other tip I have today is if you do receive benefits like SNAP, be sure to check out what all extras you can get. Many museums offer free or deeply discounted admission with your SNAP card.
What other ideas do you have? Please share them with me in the comments!
