Lava Tunnel

Our next video is out and ready to watch here. In this one, we go tour the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir. This video features plenty of rotaries/roundabouts, so if you are wondering what they’re like in Iceland, this video is for you.

This drive takes you through a more industrial section of the Reykjavik area, and then out to the lava tunnel area. We finally got out of the rain storm, and we caught a beautiful rainbow.

The Raufarhólshellir tour is required if you want to see the lava tunnel. You wear protective gear, and you’re with a tour group. The tour is listed as accessible for most. Unfortunately for me, the terrain was too difficult for my ankles and injured foot. It is rocky, wet, and uneven. I had to turn back about 3/4 of the way through. The tour had a guide come and escort me out, and they went at a slower pace to help me out. I commend them on their excellent guest services!

However, the history of the cave and the beauty inside impressed both me and my husband. You can see where the lava rushed through the ground, leaving whorls and swirls. Our guides gave fascinating lectures on the tunnel, and they offer ample time for questions. Check out the video for more photos from this tour.

We only have two videos from our Iceland trip left to publish. Next time, we go back to Reykjavik for ice cream and tattoos then head to our Viking themed hotel. In the last video, we will visit a giantess then return to where we started, our favorite little bakery in Keflavik. Happy holidays!
