Iceland Day 5 Video Is Up!

It was a drizzly, cold day in Iceland on October 18, 2024, and you can watch the next step of our adventure here. We started off with a few breaks in the clouds, but that moment of calm quickly deteriorated into driving winds and sideways sleet. On this day, we began the trip in Kirkjubæjarklaustur and ended our journey in Höfn.

Mere seconds before the memory card fills up, as we approach Foss á Síðu

Hilariously, as we begin our day, you hear me ask if we need to change the memory card. Yes, yes you do because in about five minutes, the card is going to be full and stop recording. We realized it wasn’t recording after our second stop, but thankfully, we didn’t miss too much. At the start of the video, you can see just how many waterfalls are visible from the road in this part of Iceland! One thing we did miss was the dash cam recording my favorite Icelandic resident ever: this random dog. He brought us a rock and played fetch with us. It was such an unexpected encounter, and I loved it. You can even see a few seconds of video we captured of this canine ambassador hanging out with us.

Doggy!

Oh wait, we were there to see Foss á Síðu, another beautiful and dramatic waterfall in Iceland which was actually why we stopped in the first place. It is a photogenic waterfall, right off of the Ring Road. It is very accessible, and it only takes a few minutes to stop and admire the beauty. You’ll get distracted by playing with a dog, though, if you’re lucky!

Foss á Síðu from Dverghamrar…I wonder if that dog wants to come home with me

The other stop that we missed was Dverghamrar Cliffs, or Dwarf Cliffs, a basalt rock formation near the waterfall. It was only about two minutes away by car, so it is easy to add into the itinerary. Legends tell of dwarves living in the cliffs, but we didn’t see any. Perhaps it was too crowded for mythological creatures. It was kind of too crowded for myself as a human creature. We got some nice photos, and we enjoyed a short hike, but unfortunately, it was too crowded for us to fully explore this area. Be aware that this location does have steps, uneven terrain, rocks, and other obstacles if mobility is a concern.

Lore of the cliffs
The reality of many stops in Iceland: they’re full of tourists!

Soon after this stop, we realized the dash cam was no longer recording, so we pulled over and replaced the card. Back on the road, we see more cliffs, dramatic rock formations, mountains in the distance, and a very exciting view of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. This day was planned to be my ice adventure day in the itinerary, and here we see our first glimpse of the glacier from the road. I had never seen one before this trip, and they really are awesome to behold.

In this section of the video, you also see one of the many one lane bridges in Iceland, so if you were nervous about how they work, you can see a one lane bridge in action towards the end. We conclude this leg of the trip at a gas station (remember from the previous video that we struggled to get gas as planned) where we finally succeeded in filling up the tank. The next video will take us to the Diamond Beach where we get a real taste of some Icelandic weather. See you soon!
