Over Memorial Day weekend, my husband had his BFF up for a visit from Oklahoma. We love to show people around Boston, but it is extra special when it is your best friend. After the airport, they headed across town to visit the USS Constitution Museum in Boston, MA. The museum and the ships in the area are free or suggested donations to visit. We encourage you to be generous, but it is good to know that if you’re unable to pay the usual big city prices that you can see these magnificent pieces of history regardless of income.

Located in the historic Charlestown Navy Yard, the USS Constitution Museum offers a fabulous introduction to life on Old Ironsides. What is it like to work on board? What was the food like? How hard is it to climb ropes on a ship that is rocking on the stormy sea? Most of the exhibits are interactive, hands on experiences that are fun for everyone. They also include artifacts and plenty of signs and information boards for those of us who love to learn.

Now that you’re an expert on Old Ironsides, you can head out to the Navy Yard to see her in person. Be aware that you must proceed through a security checkpoint, such as at the airport, before boarding the USS Constitution, and you will need an approved ID. Once on board, you can really imagine that you’re a sailor at sea. Keep an eye on their events page if you’ll be in Boston because this ship does sail from time to time, also.

The USS Constitution isn’t the only ship you can see in the Charlestown Navy Yard, either. The USS Cassin Young is docked and available for viewing, as well. She is one of only four Fletcher-class destroyers still afloat. The hours vary on this ship, so contact them in advance if you’d like to ensure you get to go aboard.

Summer is an excellent time to go explore the Charlestown Navy Yard. You can get sunshine and fresh air to invigorate your body while fueling your mind with interesting knowledge and facts, and all without emptying your wallet! I personally find this area of Boston to be one that I never tire of visiting. Have you been there? Let me know in the comments!
