A Merrimack Valley Favorite: Dar Rafiki’s

If you’re from the Haverhill, Massachusetts area, and you’re on social media, then most likely you’ve been hearing about Dar Rafiki’s bakery for a few months. Even Boston publications have gotten in on the sensation as word has spread about the flaky goodness served in this unassuming little shop. So this post isn’t necessarily for the locals, but for the hungry road trippers who pass through this part of the Merrimack Valley.

Welcome to Dar Rafiki’s!

I see many posts in social media travel groups with a driving route that includes I-495, and with good reason. This stretch of interstate in Massachusetts leads north to beaches and routes to the White Mountains and Maine. Heading south, you’ll find your way to Boston and beyond. Located at 389 Main Street in Haverhill, MA, Dar Rafiki’s is in a prime spot for a delicious detour.

Grab a bite and take it to the castle for a fast, delicious, and scenic lunch!

I will warn you that your first few minutes in the bakery will be spent in a sort of gluttony-induced panic as you attempt to narrow down what you want from the scrumptious array of options. Flaky feta and spinach stuffed pies, pastrami or roast beef packed croissants, decadent cream filled pastries all tempt you to try a bite. At about $1.99 to $4.99 per item, you can afford to indulge your taste buds.

So many tasty options

One thing I really love about their dessert pastries and croissant cubes is the light sweetness. I’m not a huge fan of the cloying, overly sweet baked goods, but Dar Rafiki’s bakery uses just the right amount of sweetness. Usually I forget to take photos in my sheer eagerness to consume these pastries. Today, you’re in luck. I managed to snap some pictures before the family dug in.

Black Forest Cherry cube the size of my hand! Definitely enough for two people to share.

It’s not just about how yummy these baked goods are. Their flavors and textures could sell themselves. No matter where you are, I encourage you to find locally owned businesses and support them instead of the chains stores and restaurants. If you truly want to experience what an area of the United States or any country is like, go find the places the locals frequent. You’ll be supporting the business, and also contributing to the economy of that community as a whole. I hope none of you dream of a world that is just ubiquitous block stores and chain restaurants. Go to the farms. Go to the little mom and pop convenience stores and gift shops. Go to the immigrant restaurants and grocery stores. You’ll get a better deal, better food, better conversation, and really unique memories of your trip.

A quick heads up! Right now, Dar Rafiki’s is running a raffle. For a $10 ticket, you could win a dream trip to Morocco, perfumes, a $500 gift card, and more! Go in and check out the details while you fill your mouth with some delicious food. The drawing is on Valentine’s Day!
