Brúarfoss

You might not always see this waterfall on the sight seeing lists for the Golden Circle, but I highly recommend taking the time to drive out to Brúarfoss. It is only about 20 minutes from Geysir, and only a couple of minutes walk from the parking lot. It was on my must see list because of the clear turquoise water rushing over dark rocks. I grew up in the red clay of Oklahoma, so blue water still fascinates me even all these years later.

There was not always a road to this spot, and seeing the waterfall required a hike. Now, you can drive down a winding gravel road (be prepared for some bumps and don’t drive too fast) to a parking lot right near the falls. We used the Parka app to pay the 750 isk parking fee which pays for maintenance of the road and lot. The waterfall is a short and easy walk from the parking lot, but like most places in Iceland, the paths can be muddy or slippery. A bridge spans the waterfall itself making photography very easy. I found Brúarfoss to be one of the most accessible, least traveled sights in the Golden Circle area.

Some people don’t feel that Brúarfoss is worth seeing, but I think this is the spot where I really fell in love with Iceland. We had the entire waterfall to ourselves for a little bit. No city noise. No people. Just us, and nature, and this picturesque stunning waterfall right in front of my very eyes. It was a calming place to watch the river rushing through the rocks. I hope you’ll go and take a breath, watch the water, and refill your calm as well.
